Mobile 0>1 stage startup. Designed to help families co-create dynamic, multi-generational family trees and preserve family history. The product targets diverse markets including India, LATAM, UK, and USA. App launched on Android, iOS, and Web platfoms.

Design tasks which I had and completed:

Integrated analytics and led structured UX bug discovery, significantly improving usability and flow consistency

Drove end-to-end UX and UI for core features across platforms, adapting to cultural nuances.

Conducted competitor and app monetization research, designed various onboarding flows and many paywalls, and tested them using Adapty, directly influencing revenue generation.

Offered and created web-to-app flows for collaborative data gathering from relatives - with frictionless, optional signup

Adapted design system built for family space and saved hundreds of development hours. Resolved a lot of issues related to features migration from Family Space to FamTree.

Completely redesigned navigation, added tree update prompts, daily tasks, and feedback flows, improving retention and boosting app store ratings to 4.0+

Project note from Ilya

FamTree grew out of Family Space as a business experiment focused on collaborative family tree-building. The app aimed to solve a tree graphs key issue - the inability to clearly visualize complex relationships like multi-marriages and extended sibling structures. I led the design direction for this project and was excited to work on 0>1 startup

UX and analytics

As with the Family Space app, I integrated analytics tools to uncover UX issues and user behavior patterns. I conducted deep research into monetization models and tree-related features across leading competitors, identifying gaps and opportunities that directly shaped our product strategy and revenue testing roadmap.

Paywalls

Then I kickstarted the app’s monetization strategy by designing multiple onboarding flows tailored to different user intents. Created and tested 30+ paywalls using Adapty, optimizing for conversion and retention. Also refined login and feed experiences to align with user motivation and increase early engagement.

End-to-end. Invitation link opened at desktop. Flow finished in mobile app in tree.

Introduced daily tasks based on tree data and a tree dashboard to promote active use and help to build flourishing family tree

Printing family tree feature

Adapted the printing family tree feature for mobile devices, enabling users to generate high-quality, print-ready layouts directly from their phones or tablets. Optimized the interface for small screens, introduced pinch-to-zoom navigation, and added quick-share options so families could easily send the print file to a local printer or professional service. This made preserving and gifting a physical family tree accessible anytime, anywhere.

Other responsibilities

Handled app localization into English and Russian, ensuring clarity and tone across markets. Designed marketing visuals and supervised a marketing designer, maintaining brand consistency across digital and print assets.

Key results

I boosted user engagement through redesigning tree features. Improved the App Store ratings to 4.0. Monetization testing across more than 36 paywalls revealed the most effective revenue paths. Web-to-app flows increased invitation's conversion rate to 16%. A design system and smart reuse of legacy components saved significant development time.
